2.4.4 METHODOLOGY
• 2.4.4.1 Collection of New Information
Vegetation Type Delineation and Mapping
Initial vegetation type delineation was made in the office by using color infrared
aerial photographs. These types were then transferred to a topographic map with a
scale of I" - 400'. Data obtained during reconnaissance surveys were used to name
each vegetation type.
Affected Area Sampling Design for Production
Both one-stage and two-stage sample designs were employed in the sampling
reported here. In the one-stage sampling design, an X, Y Grid system was imposed
over the area to be sampled. Pairs of random numbers were generated using an HP-
25 calculator programmed to generate random numbers. These numbers were then
located on the grid. After the sample locations were selected, pacing was used to
• locate them in the field. A n exclosure was erected at each sampling location. This
method of sampling was used for The Willow/Redtop and Subirrigated Shrub.
A two-stage sample design was used to sample the Aspen Woodland, Sage-
brush/Snowberry, and Mountain Shrub types. The first-stage samples were 60 feet x
60 feet exclosures in which a potential of 720 sample plots (0.5 M x I.0 M) could
be located. Seven exclosures were used for the Mountain Shrub vegetation type, six
for the Sagebrush/Snowberry type, and five exclosures for the Aspen vegetation type.
These first stage samples were randomly located using an X, Y Grid system imposed
over the area to be sampled. Pairs of random numbers were generated using an HP-
25 calculator programmed to generate random numbers. Second-stage sampling was
performed by taking random samples within each of the exclosures, using a 0.5 M x
I.0 M quadrat.
Production data were obtained by clipping the above-ground current year's
growth of shrubs, fortis, and grasses in all sampling quadrats (0.5 M x I.0 M).
Harvested specimens were placed in paper bags. The samples were oven-dried at
IOSoC for at least 24 hours and then weighed to the nearest tenth of a gram.

Revised 7-81 2.4-9
