• C. _ REFERENCE AREAS
C.1. Purpose of Sampling
Each reference area rill be sampled initially for cover, productivity and
botanical composition to establish comparability to the area to be mined.
Thereafter, the reference areas will serve as a measure of year quality in
terms of total cover and productivity of perennial herbaceous species for
comparison to revegetated areas.
C.2. General Sampling Procedure
Ne will construct a 100-point grid of each reference area and draw at randon
15 to 20 of those points for locating sample plots. Individual plot size
for cover is 16 square feet, and for productivity is 4 square feet, as
described in B.6.3. All data rill be collected in August and early
• September.
C.3. Statistical Calculations
C.3.1. For reference area comparability
Refer to Section B.6.5. for description of proposed group comparison T test.
C.3.2. For success standards
Sample statistics (as im Table 1) will be calculated for both total cover
and productivity in years Y9 and Y10, and used to establish success standards
according to the weighted-average procedure of 4.15.~(4)(b).
/.
11
