.~ • • <br />This seed mixture recommendation is based upon adaptation of the <br />selected species to a sandy loam surface texture of the overlying, <br />shaped and graded backfill material. Due to the possibility of <br />varying amounts of subsoil clay or shale material being incorporated <br />into the final backfill material after processing, it is highly <br />recommended that a soil texture determination be performed after <br />final grading but prior to seeding, to determine final growth medium <br />surface texture. The SCS can provide this soil texture determination <br />upon request. Final surface texture <e.g. clayey or loamy) may <br />necessitate minor modifications to the recommended seeding mixture. <br />In addition to the enclosed SCS recommendation for the reclamation <br />seeding mixture, a plan for required tree planting formulated by Fort <br />Carson DEH staff is also enclosed for reference. Any questions <br />regarding the tree planting specifications should be referred to the <br />Fort Carson staff. <br />5) Seeding should be accomplished using an appropriate grass <br />drill. The drill should be equipped with a satisfactory seed-feeding <br />mechanism, agitator(s), double-disk furrow openers with depth bands, <br />and packer (press) wheels and/or drag chains. If small legume seed <br />is to be drilled, the drill should have an appropriate legume <br />(alfalfa) box with individual calibration capability; this would also <br />hold true for small, scarified grass seed. Distance between drill <br />rows should not exceed 12 inches. <br />Seed may be broadcast in areas which are inaccessible to a grass <br />drill (e.g. steep slopes). If the seed is broadcast, the recommended <br />seeding rates per acre in column (3) on form CO-ECS-S should be <br />doubled. The seed should be uniformly distributed and covered by <br />hand raking or dragging an English (or similar) harrow over the <br />seeded area. Under no conditions should seed be placed deeper than <br />three-quarter (3/4) inch below the soil surface, and preferably no <br />deeper than one-half (1/2) inch. Seeding should not be done when the <br />soi I surface is frozen. <br />6) Spring planting (March-April) should be satisfactory; late <br />fall planting (after November 1) is also acceptable. If supplemental <br />irrigation is available, the seedbed should be kept moist but not <br />excessively wet while germination and seedling establishment are <br />occurring. Water should be provided sufficient only to keep the <br />plants from experiencing water stress or wilting, so that root <br />systems will develop into deeper soil layers and rely more heavily on <br />natural soil moisture as the growing season progresses. <br />If no water is available to provide limited irrigation at time <br />of seeding and germination, seeding should preferably be done in late <br />fall, with soil and air temperatures cold enough to prevent seed <br />germination, but prior to permanent winter snowfall. Seeds will <br />remain dormant over winter and germinate the following spring using <br />snowmelt moisture. <br />
