Office of Surface Mining Reference Nn.: CO 0014
r~
J
Background: The regional office of the Otfice of Surface tuning (OSff) has
received a proposal for underground mining of coal from approximately 36 acres
of Federal coal lease C-27103. The proposed operation would be conducted from
adjacent Federally leased coal lands and an underground mine for which the
Geological Survey, Department of Interior, approved a mining and reclamation
plan on January 16, 1978. The proposed operation would permit mining for a
distance of 750 Feet into the lease area for the purpose of constructing sumps
which will be used in conjunction with a sediment pond on [}ie existing mine
area to control runoff from the existing mine facilities. Tlie proposal also
requests permission [o mine an additional 470 feet into the lease area in
.~~
order [o meec contractual coal shipment requirements pending 054's analysis of
,r~
u
the mine plan submitted for the remainder of [hu lease. Because a complete
review of the permit application for the entire permit area has not burn
completed and because of the lack of information regarding a p~siblr.
hydrologic connec[Son between the coal seam to be mined and the alluvium of
the North Fork of the Gunnison River, approval of this action would he
contingent on, a[ a minimum, the following s[Spulations:
1. As mining of the 1st east mains progresses information on ground water
inflow quantity and quality, and fracture systems in the coil must be gathered
and reported [o both the state and OSM on a monthly basis.
•
