• vegetative cover, only fast hit data was used, though second and third hit data were
also recorded in the reference area.
Woody Plant Density;
Woody plant density was estimated only in the reclaimed area using elongated
quadrats. For interest's sake, two different sized quadrats were used. The number of
woody stems that were rooted within 50 square meter quadrats (SOm x lm) were
counted. Additionally, at each sample location, stems were counted in the contiguous
50 meter square quadrat and added to the former amount to comprise a 100 square
meter quadrat. Half shrubs were not included in the woody stem counts. It was not
necessary to sample this vegetation parameter as part of a Phase II bond release
demonstration.
•
Species Diversity:
Generally, multiple hit data (first, second, third...) are used to determine
whether the species diversity standard has been met. As noted above, only fast hit data
were collected on reclaimed areas. However, because fast hits generally far exceed all
other vegetative hits combined (especially with herbaceous dominated vegetation), fast
hit data provided a sufficient estimate of species diversity for the purposes of this
report. During reference area sampling, all vegetation hits (lust, second, third...) were
recorded for use in determining what proportion of the cover was contributed by each
life form grouping (trees, shrubs, herbs). It was not necessary to sample this
vegetation parameter as part of a Phase II bond release demonstration.
•
5
