EXHIBIT I - SOILS INFORMATION

•
Lease tract JD-g falls within zone mapped as unit
three on the General Soil 2dap - Dolores River Basin.
Soil mapping unit three is also found on It is
described as "rock outcrops and very shallow soils of the
canyons". It is the most extensive mapping unit of ,the
Dolores River Basin, constituting approximately 1/3 of the
area.
A typical landscape is characterized by the deep sandstone
canyons with steep slopes (from 25-10096) and long narrow
valleys. The dominant parent material for these soils is
sandstone with some shale and alluvium.
This mapping unit can be divided into three general components.
Rock outcrops account for about 45 percent of the unit. These
are largely of sandstone with some small shale outcrops.
About half of the unit 0+996) is in shallow (20 inches or less)
and stoney soils, generally with a light-colored, loamy surface
layer, t+iixed alluvial soils of the Dolores and San Miguel
River bottoms account for about six percent of the mapping unit.
The following 1966 Great Groups, Subgroups, or hand types are
found in this mapping unit:
PERCENT OF
DiAPPING UNIT
GROUP
45
25
20
4
2
Rock outcrops
Haplustolls
Torriorthents
Lithic Argiustolls
Boralfs and Cryobarolls
Torrifluvents
In most areas mapped as unit three the mean annual temperature
falls between 42 degrees F and 52 degrees F, with a frost free
period of between 100 and 160 days. Sheet erosion is described
as moderate. Sediment yield is estimated at less than 0.2 to
1.0 acre feet per souare mile per year,
The dominant land use of mapping unit 3 is for range and wild-
life. Of the 974,000 acres it covers in the Dolores River
Basin, 3,800 acres are in irrigated cropland and there is no
dry cropland.
The dominant ground cover associated with mapping unit 3 is
pinyon-juniper. At higher elevations oakbrush, serviceberry,
and grass are more prevalent, while willows and cottonwoods
may be found along the narrow valleys.
(The preceeding paragraphs describe large categories of the
Dolores River Basin, into which the ,7D_g property falls.)
