rl
• Unifaces: longitudinal
Description: generally
on one face which forms
is unmodified; all-over
Material: chert.
Edge angles: 55°-60°.
Edge wear: polish with
edge, Typ.- rre. Three specimens (not illustrated)
consists of thin flakes with marginal retouch
the cutting edge. A majority of flake surface
retouch not present.
limited step flaking.
Variation: edges are straight to slightly concave. The thickness of
the original flake is variable, but generally quite thin.
Special notes: the longitudinal edged tools probably overlap into the
modified flake tool category in that the characteristics of intentional
and casual modification tend to blend with one another. No side scrapers
were recovered, which may be an accident of preservation or of the col-
lection technique. The presence of modified flakes suggests that there
should be more representatives of this category than were found in the
initial survey.
Correlations with other sites: no comparable material located in the
literature search.
Unifaces: perimetrically flaked, Type IIC. Three Specimens (Fig. 9c, d, ~)
Description: tools are retouched around the perimeter of a generally
oval shaped flake, and there are multiple working edges present. Plano-
convex cross section is apparent, and edge angle is variable on the indi-
vidual tool.
Materials: chert and quartzite.
Edge angles: 55°-90°
Edge wear: step flaking and gouging.
Variation: the edge angle varies with the thickness of the flake; thicker
portions have steeper edge angles and more extensive retouch.
Size range: the long axis, 43-72 mm.; short axis, 29-50 nm.; and thickness,
9-22 nun.
Special notes: the perimetrically flaked uniface tools are quite variable
in size. Two are made on flakes and one on a core. Each tool exhibits
different characteristics within terms of edge wear and edge angle. They
each incorporate a variety of edge angles as the cross sections, which ar-e
generally piano-convex, have the thickest point adjacent to an edge,
rather than in the center of the tool. Thus, the edge closest to the
thick point is much steeper than the opposing edge.
Correlations with other sites: LoDaisKa 36-64 in. levels (Irwin and
Irwin 1959); Luster Cave (bJormington and Lister 1956); Pictograph Cave II!
(hlulley 1958); l2ilbur Thoma° S"~lte~' ((iret•rnit7 ~t .~'. 1971).
•
