Comments: The si;.a Ls designated a campsite on the basis o= the <br />two grinding stone Fragments which indicate that it <br />is more than 3ust a chipping station. No evidence • <br />of firepits or other =eatures are visible on the <br />present surface, and no artifacts were collected which <br />permit us to estimate the age or cultural affiliation <br />of the Former campers. <br />No further work is deemed necessary at this site, even <br />if it might be destroyed through construction, mining, <br />or darning activities. <br />Site: SMF281, Chipping site and two rockshelters. <br />Location: T6N, R91W', NW; o£ NW; of Section 31 (U.S.G.S. Sound <br />Bottom Quad). <br />Description: • <br />The site is Located on top o£ and at the base of a <br />sandstone remnant in the bottomlands of the confluence <br />of the Yampa and Williams Fork Rivers. All the stone <br />artifacts and chipping detritus were found on top of <br />the hi 11, at an altitude of 6160 feet, in an area <br />approximately SO by 80 yards. The hilltop is covered <br />with sace, topsoil, and grass. Material peters off <br />to the west where the gravel cao of the hill is more <br />exposed. The hilltop shows no evidence to indicate <br />that it is o*_her than 3 Sllr'3Ce site (see Fig. 6). <br />At the base of the hill on the east side are b.~o small <br />shelter overhangs. These are des~~nated SMF281.a and <br />_ • <br />
