A map of that pit is enclosed.
The Colorado River Fish Recovery Program, in partnership with the Bureau of Land
Management, has been negotiating with the land owner and Whitewater Building Materials
Corporation to acquire this property. We propose to reconnect this pit to the Gunnison River to
provide habitat for endangered fish. We would remove a portion, or portions, of the levy so
endangered fish can enter that area. This would provide food, rest, and shelter for the fish during
the flood season.
Mr. Ed Gardner from Whitewater Building Materials Corporation mentioned that you are
concerned about a slump along the dike on the east side of the pit. We wanted you to know that
we may want to remove the dike in that same area to connect the pit to the river. We had hoped
to acquire the property by this time, but the whole process was delayed by a title problem. The
title question has now been resolved, and we are preparing an appraisal and engineering studies
to complete the project. Once [he appraisals have been completed, we can negotiate with the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Bureau of Reclamation Western Area Power Administration Colorado Utah Wyoming
Environmental Defense Fund National Audubon Society Colorado Wildlife Federation Wyoming Wildlife Federation
Colorado Water Congress Utah Water Users Association Wyoming Water Development Association Colorado River Energy Distributors Association
