• When a structural feature or artifact is found, the survey is halted and
an intense search of the area is conducted in an attempt to define the site.
A site consists of structural features or several artifacts in a small area.
If very few artifacts are found over a wide area they are recorded as isolated
finds. Locations of the artifacts are recorded and assigned a number in
accordance with the Laboratory of Public Archaeology catalog system. For
example, IF26RT, where IF means isolated find, 26 means the 26th isolated find
recorded in the county, and RT is the county abreviation according to the
Smithsonian Institution nomenclature system and, in this case, signifies
Routt County. If the area is defined as a site, it is assigned a number in
accordance with the Smithsonian Institution nomenclature system. For example,
5RT44, where 5 is the number assigned Colorado on the basis of its
• alphabetical placement, RT is the county designation (in this case, Routt
County), and 44 is the number of the site, numbered consecutively. A site
form, distributed by the Colorado State Archaeological Office, is then filled
out, giving information concerning site location, size, and height. A sketch
of the site and description of the vegetation, topography, and access is also
included. Artifacts are located in reference to a site datum which has been
staked and appropriately labeled with the site number. All artifacts, such as
tools, those useful in determining the date of the site, and activities that
occurred at the site, are located in relationship to datum and collected. Txo
transects are layed out perpendicular to each other and extend across the
site. All artifacts within the transect are collected. Features are recorded
individually along with their respective sizes, types, and descriptions;
location relative to datum is also noted. The locations of features,
• transects, and artifacts are then plotted on a site map.
A-2 salance ssrvlces divlslon
