Of i,'_"~: a; •;i~90Jrciis
Dear Sir:
U I ~~
This letter shall constitute the Soil Conservation Service real;/ to your
recuest for resource information on se*reral e~astant or proposed gra~re l pits
£or the purpose of fi]i ng mine reclamation permits.
I ha~re conducted on-site reviews of the soil and zre gelation resources of each
of the pits. I satisfied. myself that the soil at each site has been adequately
described by our soil surveys, :with the exceptions of the :Liramonte and Beaver
i~iesa pits where the soil has not been sur•reyed. For the saY.e of bre~ritr, I am
enclosing photo copies of the soil series that pertains to each pit instead
of describing it in this narrative. I also completed a vegetatior. in-rentox^J
of each site on adjacent undisturbed areas. Those imrentories are also included
as apart of this report.
For the purpose of this report I hatre subdi~r_ded. the list of pits into three
catagories: those in wi ch additional work may be done in the future; those in
which no further work o,7.1 be done once the stockpile of gra*rel is remotred; and
active or proposed pits. I will discuss each of the pits within this breakdotrn.
Possible Future ?~Ior1c:
TS Klondike -This site is situated in (2U2) Clapper= orriorthents soil complex
(Clapper fraction). There is no e~ridence of any steclcpile of topsoil, but
there is about 10 inches of soil material which could be set aside if the pit is
caorl:ed further. The potential plant community is typical of Pinyon-Juniper
[iood]and. There is moderate erosion hazard because of slope.
~1G Long Draw -This pit is located in (:t22) Unearned-lnsari loam complex
(nnsari fraction). T:.ere is no e•ridence of stockpiled topsoil. The surface
10 inches is a sanay loam which could be set aside for surfacing if the pit is
worked further. The surrounding area is t;r~ical of open Pinyon-Juniper iiood-
land. There is 7_•'ttle erosion hazard because of the gentle slope.
,`#9 Slick Rock -This pit is located in (lag) Unnamed gra-relly sandy loam on
a bench above the Dolores River. There is a small amount of soil material
^,et aside for surfacing. It appears ti7ere maj be about iU inches o£ material
suitable for tcpsoiling that could be used i° one pit is further excavated.
The vegetation is typical of low potential Pinyon-Juniper iioodlard. The
erosion hazard is slight because of soil texture and gentle slopes.
0 The Son Conaer.ahon Ser.~ca SCS-AS-t
U o an a9encY of the 10-79
OeDariment of Agnc Dltur!
