phnnmet, andbeIta County property tax values are tied to property values.
Long time residents of Coaiby valley have stated that mad damage was a major
problem when the Red Canyon mine was in operation, in spite of mad damage
agreements. Tf the courrty permits this operation will they allocate the funds to maintain
this increasingly busy roadway, or will we be dodging potholes for the next 30 years?
E. FLOODPLAINS: the valley of the proposed operation drains irrto a tn'butary of Ward
Creek. There is a residence situated across the mad from the mouth of the valley. There is
not a perennial stream in the valley but it is subject to flash floods. Denuding the sides
and bottom of this valley will greatly increase flood potential.
G. HOODED LIGHTING:
We understand all power will be provided by generators. Will there be pole Lights
powered by generators mm~ing all night? Bensons say they do not plan on night lighting,
but there is no guarantee of this. Generators running at night will ensure no time of quiet
for the neighborhood. We were told that although they do not plan routine weekend and
night use of the property, circrunsfances might arise when off hour use might happen. In
other words, the neighbors can expect use anytime during the day and night at the
discretion of the operators. Benson brothers were asked by the neighbors to use the
existing power to the area, or to run power from the road to the area. They are not
interested in doing this for financial reasons. The generator noise impact to the neighhors
is less of a factor to them than the financial considerations.
R. IRRIGATION WATER: "oo irrigation water will be affected by this operation"
Benson Brothers on 2/10/05 stated that they plan to use 3000 to 4000 gallons of
water per day from the Red Canyon mine to mist the crusher and access road. This water
flows into a tributary of Ward Creek. Since Ward Creek is already over allocated, the use
of this tributary water may adversely affect water users down stream. Bensons plan to
drill a commercial well if the spring usage is not allowed. Note that this amount of water
is equivalent to the average daily use of 10 households.
J. NUISANCES:
"noise from crushing operations and truck traffic" Direct communication
with Benson Brothers on,2/10/05: we were told that on their permit they did not specify
time of year and that they intend for the quarry to be active all year round. Many people in
the area are retired. The din of semi trucks going through the valley starting at 7AM and
continuing throughout the day will greatly decrease the quality of life these folks moved
to the quiet valley to enjoy. There is no control established over how many trucks may be
allowed per day, and Benson Brothers said on 2/10105 that the neighborhood can expect
as many as 30 semi trucks per day during peak operations. Many people walk and ride
horses along the Ward Creek Road. This already established activity is not compatible
with heavy truck traffic. Benson Brothers on 2/10/05 told us they intend to use jake
brakes on the trucks. Many towns prohibit the use of jake brakes within their limits. The
racket from these brakes will reverberate down this relatively narrow valley. This is
something not acceptable in a residential area. It is expected that the heaviest use will be
