18905 Ward Creek Road
Cedaredge, Colorado 81413
February 14, 2005
Delta County Planning Department
Delta County Courthouse
501 Palmer Street, Suite 115
Delta, Colorado 81416
RE: SDOS-001 BENSON BROTHERS -RED CANYON SHALE QUARRY
Dear Sirs:
ERAS CHANGE! Earlier lifestyles evolve to meet the demands of an ever changing
present. Boazdwalks in old towns are torn up to accommodate the new, dusty streets are
paved, demographics shift, and residents` visions of their neighborhood respond
accordingly. A case in point is Coalby Canyoxi. It is no longer the isolated, rural valley it
once was. The Coalby general store has moved to Cedazedge's Old Town, the coal mines
aze closed, the last mine (Belden's Red Rock Quarry) is being reclaimed, land has been
and is being subdivided, and a new generation of older, retired people have moved in to
reside alongside the long-time residents. Yet it remains a wonderfully cohesive
community.
Accordingly, it is time to move on in our thinking. Please recognize that Coalby Canyon
is now a sought after residential area and that approval of this quarry would create an
inappropriate land use in the existing environment. I urge denial of the Benson Brothers
application to none the Red Canyon Shale Quarry.
Sincere ~ ~, /
l~~{-.
Laurae Fortner-Welch
