- A direct threat of cock fall and mud 'slide to three homes directly south and below the
sandstone cliffs.
- Visual impact to a majority of the 100 homes within a one mile radius as well as all the
traffic on Ward Creek Road.
- Noise from the quarry operations amplif ed off the surrounding canyon walls disturbing
the existing rural nature of the area.
- Dust from the operations that can not be misted or wafered would be carried by daily up
canyon/down canyon winds over many of the homes.
- Water drawn locally for dust control may affect local wells.
- Large truck traffic (estimated by Benson Brothers to be up to 60 one way trips on
maximum haul days) will create safety hazards at the blind entrance to the proposed mine
area and on any of the available mutes out of Coalby Canyon.
- Runoff and storm water could threaten the three homes below the sandstone cliffs and
foul Carbon irrigation ditch to the west of the proposed activity.
- Wildlife will be displaced by the activity and removal of the pinion juniper cover.
- Real estate values (and property tax revenue to the county) will be depressed in the area
for the duration of any mining activity.
Although we were not on the notification mailing list for the proposed project, our home
is located immediately across Ward Creek Road from the road identified as the Red
Canyon Mine access road and we will be directly impacted by the proposed activity.
Since we will be unable to attend the Surface Creek APC meeting on March 2, I
appreciate your consideration of these comments and request the APC recommend denial
of the subject application to mine red shale in Coalby Canyon.
Thank you, \~ \
~~ ~ L L W F-LC~
Bill Welch
