FEB-16-05 01:00 PM ~ WESTLINE. GRAPHICS 9T0 056 3910 ~ P.02
Della County Planning Dept.
Date ReceNed
Z'f}~ot-
Delta County Planning ~'° fJA
RE : SDOS-001 Benson Brothers- New Gravel Pit '.A
Applicant/Landowner :Benson Brothers Trucking &t Equipment
As residents of Coalby Canyon; living within a mile of the proposed mining operation
we have the following concerns;
This area is no longer rural; but n,ral residential with over 100 residences within a l mile
radius of the proposed site, property rights of all landowners will be impacted:
-Noise: High levels of noise from this type of operation will be unacceptable if you arc to
be outside during operating hours in a rural residential area. With the site shaped like an
Amphitheater I would think this site will rcllect sound quite well to the surrounding area.
Contrary to the applicants permit "Crushing Equipment will be surrounded on 3 sides
by high ridges to REDUCE the eli'ects of the noise and dust!"
-Dust: Will be seen and drift over entire surrounding area Causing a real health wncern.
The Fire Department has been called to their other site several times due to concern of the
dust cloud looking like a fire. Will misting of materials be enough to keep the dust in
check? 1 question this with what they have proposed.
-Water: Per the permit application; "Water needed for operations or dust control will M~
hrnught in by water tnrck from the applicants exisiting facility in Austin. `. ARcr an on
site tour with Benson Brothers, residents were told , `Ground water would be pumped
from the Red Canyon Mine spring or from proposed water well sites nn site " So why
isn't that mentioned in their permit application? With this use of water from an old mine
certainly health concerns could be an issue. With the taking of this water what effect will
this have on surrounding wells and down stream flow of Ward Creek?
-Safety: This site has a Blind entrance onto Ward Creek Road, with a proposed 5 heavy
semi gravel trucks per day /but could run as high as 30 a day during peak operation with
other Contractors hauling from the site; it could equa160 daily trips on Ward Crcck Road.
This road carries an ever increasing amount of residential traffic, people walking, biking
horseback riding, and viewing the abundant wildlife along this roadway; this will cause
safety concerns to all that travel the Ward Creek Road. Not to Say anything about the
abundant deer, turkey, elk and other wildlife that cross Ward Creek Road any time during
the day. We don't want to give up our use of Ward"Creek Road for Benson Brothcra to
benefit only! This road will not be a safe road to travel for residents or the wildlife that
travel through.
We ask that the permit application by Benson Brothers Red Canyon Rock Quarry be
DF.NIF.D as their operation will not be tolerable or acceptable to the life of which we
came here for; quietness and enjoyment of the outdoor activities our property and
surrounding area affords us. The impact would be long term { 15-20 years or more}, this
would have a long term effect on Coalby residents Health, Safety and not to mention
decline in property values.
hank u for y ur considerat' on~h~s ~ r~.,1 ~~~~
Kath t$. ~ntin La
