The area to be
quarried is not remote, there are at least ten houses within 1,000 feet of the access road. These property
owners, including myself did not receive any official proposal letters from Benson Brothers or Delta
County.
This gravel pit will have a sign~gnt effect on our property values and quality of life. The application says
there could be as many as 30 gravel trucks up and down the road per day; that's 60 trips past my house
per day. As far as I know this estimate does not indude the water trucks they will be using, the employees
travelling to and from work, nor does it indude the gravel hauling trucks owned by local excavators and
road builders. Sounds in this valley tend to echo from dill to hill to home. Increased noise levels in this
one area is going to make Coalby valley sound like an industrial zone. I do not want to live in an industrial
zone and those who wouldn't mind living in an industrial zone are not going to want to pay full price for my
property.
( understand that Benson Brothers will not be using the power lines that are already in place and will
instead be using diesel generators for their electricity. They won't even be supporting DMEA. This says to
me that they don't care one bit about the communty or the noise and pollution they will create. The
amount of dust created from quarrying combined with fossil fuel emissions will create a significant
air-home health risk to local residents. The amount of water needed to bring in for dust control is
unacceptable, given the value of water in this part of the state..
The visual scar left on the hill after years of digging will be tremendous; it will be visible from miles down
the valley, and parts of highway 65. Take a drive by the current BB gravel pit, see all of the equipment
parked at the property edge, they will only add to the pile of dangerous junk and derelict equipment that
Jce Belden has stored on the access road.
The effect of heavy traffic in places where there has not previously been, is to divide the community.
Heavy traffic is dangerous. With the number of deer in this valley there is sure to be a weekly slaughter.
Many of the neighbors have said that "rf this project is approved, they will move. I have done a lot of work
for my neighbors, they are a significant portion of my income. If these people move, then that is a loss of
work for me. If the project is approved, I will move too. I would be interested to know who is going to buy
properties in Coalby. I wonder if there is a bigger plan in the works here. Are there other minerals and or
fuels below my property that companies might be interested in mining?
The request for this application should be denied.
Signed,
Christopher D.
