-15-
• The gravel road was built in 1977, and the behavior of
individual cuts during this period can be evaluated and used
for the recommendations on cut slopes and configurations in
these geological conditions for the design of the upgraded haul
road.
Our documentation of these cuts and observations on their
behavior are presented in this section. The cuts were numbered
for convenience's sake (see Geotechnical Maps, Plates 2 A - 2 D).
The cut No. 1 is located in a ridge between the Munger
Creek valley and the valley of its tributary. The cut is excav-
ated in terrace deposits. The cut reaches its maximum height
of 50 to SS feet; the cut slope is between 55 and 75 degrees.
The inspection of the cut face does not reveal any indications
of stability problems. In spite of the overall steep cut slope,
there are no significant sloughs visible at the cut face. Even
the amount of soil eroded from the cut face is very minor.
The_cut_NO__2 is located partly in soils and partly in
slope-forming shales and sandstones. The lower cut portion
that has been excavated in colluvial soils is low and at a
slope of about 52 degrees. There are minor sloughs visible
on the cut surface showing distinctly the difference between
the terrace deposits of the cut number 1 and the colluvial soils
in this cut portion. The remaining portion of the cut is in
• rocks, excavated at an angle of about 63 degrees. The height
of the cut reaches s ome 50 feet. The cut has been excavated
