Box 100
Parachute, CO 01635
Paul McGehee
lhited Sand and Gravel
618 Dike Road
Grand Junctim, CO
RE: Koch Gravel Pit
Dear Sirs:
REFER TO:
This is the Wildlife Statement far this project. Since the project area has
had gravel mining activity in the recent past the impact of this project to
wildlife populations should be relatively minor. Flowever we recommend that
the pit be reclaimed to provide good fish and wildlife habitat for use once
the disturbance from mining is gme. Below are our recommerndations for
reclaiming the pit:
1) We support the proposal to leave a 100 foot buffer between the pit
and the river bank. The natural vegetatim in this buffer area
should be left undisturbed.
' 2) Cottonwood trees are an important component of the riparian ecosystem
in this area and are used by nary species of wildlife. We rectxmrend
' that as many cottonwood trees be left standing as possible. The
revet3etation plan for the project should include sane cottonwood
plantings.
' 3) Create an island in the pit if possible. Islands provide a secure
nesting and ra~sting place for particularly waterfowl and
shorebirds. An island would also enhance the fish habitat value of
' the pit by creating addititxnal shoreline and shallow water area.
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Hamlet J.
