Ms. Susan Dlowry
July 13, 1982
Page Two
7. That because of the small relative area of pinyon
pine-juniper in relation to the mining area (8$+)
and in relation to the large area of pinyon-pine in
the general vicinity of the mining area, conversion
would result in little impact to the total
vegetative community.
If the Division would accept this request, the necessity for
additional baseline sampling in the pinyon pine-juniper type
was brought into question. We felt that the expenditure of
time and money necessary for the collection of this
additional sampling far outweighed the value of this
information in determining future revegetation success in the
converted grassland type. We also felt that sampling already
performed in the pinyon pine-juniper area, although it did
not meet the statistical standard req~;ired by the Division,
• was adequate for a baseline description of this vegetative
community.
Mr. Banta indicated that the Division would discuss this
matter further and convey its decision on these matters as
soon as possible.
Additional items discussed at this meeting were:
1. Diversity success criteria for revegetation
We indicated that we felt uncomfortable being tied firmly
to numbers that were not reflective of the pre-mine
vegetative communit~~. The Division said that the
diversity success criteria could remain somewhat
flexible and the Division would work with CCMC to
establish criteria based on the preliminary results of
our revegetation efforts. The Division also said that
they would send us information outlining how they had
dealt with other companies in establishing a suitable
approach to this question.
•
