COLORADO DIVISION OF WATER RESOURCES ~Z ~•~~
DIVISION THREE ~Ip~Rt=,^,
MINE NAME: Lyle Smith Pit 'ice"
MINE ID NO.: M-77-053 _
COUNTY: Costilla
LOCATION: NE1/4, Sec. 20, T30S, R72W, 6th PM
DATE OF INSPECTION: November 23, 1994
FINDINGS AND REMARKS:
At the time of the inspection, the crusher was in operation. I met
the crusher operator, Danny Shelton. A low berm has been
constructed in the NE portion of the pit. This berm contains the
water seepage into an approximate 50' by 25' pond. This pond was
ice-covered at the time of inspection.
A diesel-powered pump was in place on normal ground level above the
pond. Mr. Shelton stated that the pump withdrew from the pond and
pumped water up to a level where the local landowner could use the
water for irrigating. No other accumulation of water was found in
the bottom of the pit.
December 1, 1994 conversation with Todd Stockebrand
Mr. Stockebrand, Controller for Asphalt Constructors, Inc. called
our office to followup on Bob Oswald's report. He said that the
seepage into the pit is seasonal and has only occurred the last two
summers. They run the pump 2 or 3 hours every 2 days to control
the seepage within the bermed area. He stated that the reason for
the pond containing much more water at the time of Oswald's
inspection was that they had moved their operation to a different
pit temporarily. The pump was not run for a period of several days
and the seepage into the pit was no longer contained in the bermed
area. Enclosed with this report is a copy of a letter from Mr.
Stockebrand received by this office November 21, 1994.
Conversation with Wavne Williams. District 35 Water Commissioner
Wayne confirmed all the details of the letter and conversation with
Mr. Stockebrand.
cC i~w~J
