• project's surface facilities and a secondary (remote) site was
located on the opposite (south) side of Coal Ridge. All monitoring
siting activities complied with U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) guidelines. This data will be used in obtaining
additional air quality permits, as needed.
It is anticipated that winds in the project area will exhibit a
somewhat bimodal distribution. Large scale atmospheric circula-
tions should result in a maxima from the west to west-northwest.
Nighttime drainage flow under otherwise calm conditions should
produce a maxima from the east-southeast to south (EH&A, 1983).
During the first six months of monitoring at the primary site, the
prevailing wind was found to be southeast (135 degrees) with an
average velocity of 5.3 mph.
Table 3.4-1 presents monthly and annual temperature data from the
cooperative weather station at Glenwood Springs for the 1951-1980
• period (US. Dept. of Commerce, 1982). The annual average tempera-
ture is approximately 47 degrees Fahrenheit. Average daily
temperatures during mid-winter range from the low teens at night,
to the upper 30's during the afternoon. During the summertime, the
typical daily temperatures vary from the low 50's at night, to the
upper 80's during the afternoon. Annual temperature extremes in
the area are estimated to vary from 10 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit
below zero, to the upper 90's.
Table 3.9-2 presents monthly and annual precipitation averages from
Glenwood Springs for the period 1951-1980 (U.S. Dept. of Commerce,
1982). The 30-year annual average precipitation is just over 16
inches. There is very little seasonal variation in precipitation
amounts, with each monthly average ranging between one and two
inches. Winter snowfall during a typical year is estimated to be
approximately 60 inches (Baldwin, 1979).
•
NCEC - Coal Ridge ~1 3-51 ABC/1145/900301
