are established. According to {'7oodmansee, Reeder, and Berg this
can take from 35 years to as much as 2000 years depending on the
site.
Large chips limit impacts on C!N ratios because of less
surface area, but their long-term decomposition can produce
prolonged N immobilization. Small chips decompose rapidly but
require more careful N management. It appears from the literature
that we do not really have a full understanding of the processes
and that the presence of undecomposed materiel in minesoils is of
more concern than the size of the material or, to a lesser extent,
the nature of the material.
6. {Vood chip mulch will only be used on the south-facing area.
To help manage the C/N ratio imbalance produced by the mulch,
additional nitrogen is needed.
7. The amount of AI actually needed is totally dependent upon a
great number of variables most of which are very poorly
understood. Berg recommends 65 pounds per acre while others
recommend anywhere from 25 to 80 pounds per acre. The approach is
to add enough N to avoid chlorosis but not so much as to boost
weed growth. Forty pounds per acre is a good starting figure. If
chlorosis appears then more N needs to be added. There is no way
to know exactly how much is needed.
8. The south side will remain undisturbed. The top and north
sides are benches and will be treat like the other benches.
9. In general practice the planting of trees needs more soil
than that required for grasses. The plan calls for a minimum of
12" of soil. Benches cannot be produced which are perfectly
level. When the soil is spread, the depressions are filled with
more soil. This is where the trees ere planted. Prior to
topsoiling, the depressions can be located and marked with a spot
of spray paint on the wall behind the bench. After the soil is
spread, the trees can be planted near the paint spots where the
soil is deeper.
10. Both.
11. The use of time released fertilizer pellets supplied as
an optional item with Colorado State Forest Service trees is a
fairly standard practice. The pellets vaill be used.
12. Tree densities are difficult to determine in this sort of a
mine. As a general goal the following will be sought.
Juniper - about 15 to 25 mature trees per acre,
Douglas Fir/Ponderosa Pine mixtures - about 30 to 50
trees per acre, (approximately a ratio of one Ponderosa
for every two Douglas Fir).
4
