Average annual precipitation ranges from 15 to 19
inches and mean annual temperature is about 49 degrees
F.
The Eckley lolls are similar to the Altvan soils. They
are near the Altvan, Dix and Dacono soils. Altvan and
Dacono soils have sand and gravel at depths between 20
and 40 inchee Dix soils have B2 horizons with weak
grades of structure.
A typical pedan of Eckley sandy loam is located 1,600
feet west and 15 feet north of the southeast corner of
section 11, T.7N., R51W.
Al-0 to 3 inches; dark grayish brown (lOYR 4!2) sandy loam, very
dark grayish brown (lOYR 312) moist; weak fine granular atruMure;
soft, very friable; neutral (pH 7.0); clear smooth boundary. (3 to 5
inchee thick)
B1-3 to 6 inchee; dark grayish browo (lOYR 4l2) gravelly eaady clay
loam, very dark grayish brown (lOYR 312) moist; moderate medium
prismatic parting to moderate medium subangulaz blocky structure;
slightly hard, friable; neutral (pH 7.0); clear smooth boundary. (2 to
4 inchee thick)
B2t-6 to 15 inches; dark brown (7SYR 4/2) gravelly sandy clay loam,
dark brown (7SYR 3l2) moist; moderate coarse prismatic parting to
moderate coarse subangular blocky structure; hard, firm; thick con-
tinuous clay fins on face of pede; neutral (pH 72); clear wavy
boundary. (5 to 10 inches thick)
B3-15 to ZO inches; brown (7SYR 5/4) gravelly coarse sandy loam, dark
brown (7.bYR 9/4) moist; weak coarse prismatic structure; hard,
very friable; neutral (pH 72Y, gradual wavy boundary. (3 to 5 inches
thkk)
IICI-20 to 43 inchee; Bght brown (7SYR 6/4) gravelly loamy costae
Band, dark brown (7SYR 9l4) moist; massive; hard, very friable;
mildly alkaline (pH 7.4); gradual wavy boundary.
IIC2-43 to 60 inchee; tight brown (7SYR 6/4) masse sand and gravel,
brown (7SYR 514) moist; single grained; loose, dry and insist; wl-
careona with come gravel lime coated mainly on the underside;
mildly alkaline (pH 7.6).
Depth to the mntreating IIC horizon ranges from 12 to 20 inchee.
These soils are commonly noncalcazeou& but some pedons have weak ac-
cumulations of calcium carbonate below depths of 40 inches.
The A horizon has color value of 4 or b dry, 2 or 3 moist, and chrome
oP 2 or 3. it is a gravelly sandy loam or gravelly loam. Tke B2t horizon
hoe a hue of lOYR or 75YR.
Eh; Series
The Eh) series consists of deep, somewhat poorly
drained soils formed in alluvium overlying sand and
gravel ELg soils are on low terraces and bottomlanda of
the South PLttte River and have slopes of 0 to 1 percent.
Average annual precipitation ranges from 13 to 19 inchee
and mean annual temperature is about 48 degrees F.
Els soils are similar to the Alda so17s. They are near the
Aida and Westphtin soils. Aida and Westplain soils have
dark surface layers with moist color values of 3 or less.
A typical pedon of Els loamy sand is located 1,150 feet
east and 225 feet north of the southwest corner of sec. 16,
T.lON., R.49W.
AI-0 W a inches; grayish brown (lOYR 5/2) loamy sand, very dark
grayish brown (IOYR 3l2) moist; weak fine granular structure; soft,
very friable; neutral (pH 7.0); clear smooth boundary. (4 to 7 inches
thick)
ACI-6 to l3 inches; light brownish gny (lOYR 6/2) loamy fine sand,
dark grayish brown (lOYR 412) moist; weak costae aubangular
blocky structure; soft, very friable; neutral (pH 7.0); gradual smooth
boundary. (5 to 8 inches thick)
AC2-t3 to 17 inchee; light brownish gray (lOYR 6/2) loamy fine sand,
dark grayish brown (lOYR 4/E) moist; massive; soft, very friable;
ealcareous• mildly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear smooth boundary. (7 to 10 inches
thick)
C2-25 to fS inches; light gray (25Y 7/2) loamy fine sand, with thin
strata of silt loam, grayish brown (2SY b/2) moist, with common
medium diatinM yellowish brown (lOYR 5/a) moist mottles; massive;
soft, very friable; calcareous; mildly alkaane (pH 7.4); smooth boun-
dary. (20 to 35 inches thick)
IIC3-5a to 60 inches; brown (lOYR 5/3) moist with rnmmon medium
brown (7SYR 519) moist mottles; mixture of coarse sand and
gravel; single grained; loose, dry and moist; neutral (pH 72).
Sand and gravel occurs below depths of 40 inches.
The A horizon hoe a color value of 4 through 6 dry, 8 or 4 moist and
chrome of 2 or S. Moist values of 3 extend to depths of leas than 7
inchee. The A horizon is commonly x loamy fine sand but ranges Lo fine
sand. The C horizon is a loamy fine sand or fine sand and is stratified.
Epping Series
The Epping aeries consists of shallow, well drained soils
that formed hl calcareous materials weathered from Brule
ailtatone. Epping soils are on upland ridges and have
slopes of 3 to 9 percent. Average annual precipitation
ranges from 13 to 17 inches and mean annual temperature
is about 49 degrees F.
Epping soils are simiLlr to the Canyon and Shingle
soils.
