• 2.04.5 General Description of Hydrology and Geology
This application provides a description of geology, hydrology and ground
and surface quality and quantity on all lands within the permit area,
the adjacent area and the general area, as defined in Section 1.04
(DEFINITIONS) of the Colorado Regulatory I~rogram.
Because of the past and present mining activities along the North Fork
of the Gunnison River, a thorough knowledge of the geology of the area
has been developed. Details on the geology of the permit and adjacent
areas are set forth in Section 2.04.6. The regional hydrology is shown
graphically on the Regional Hydrology Map (Map 5), while site-specific
geology is found on the Geology/Hydrology Map (Map 6).
The "general area" with respect to hydrology is defined by Section 1.04
as that topographic basin that surrounds the area to be mined during the
life of the operation. The Bear Coal Company operation is a small
• portion of the mining that is being conducted in the general area on
either side of the North Fork of the Gunnison River. Much work on the
hydrology has been undertaken by ARCO, Bear Coal Company, and other
operators along the North Fork of the Gunnison River. Information on
the hydrology of the general and adjacent areas is set forth in the Bear
Coal Company permit application for the Mt. Gunnison Mine, submitted to
the Division by ARCO. A summary of the hydrology of the addition to the
Bear Coal Company permit area for the Bear No. 3 Portals is found in
Section 2.04.7.
L
2.04-11
