2.04.4
Although several mines still remain along the North Fork of the
Gunnison River and the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad is still
operating, abandoned waste dumps and deteriorating structures of
the old mines can still be seen from Highway 133.
The permit area of the Bear Coal Company was not the location of
any events important to the course of local, state or national
history. Nothing from the old Edwards Mine has been associated
with people important in local, state or national history. None of
the surviving physical remains of the old Edwards Mine had any
characteristics to make them more representative or more distinct
than many of the other abandoned sites in the surrounding country
that are near to proposed or existing mining activities.
In addition, there is nothing historic about the permit area.
Sites of past coal mining are merely old. The removal of old
mining and associated sites will not constitute an impact on the
significant historic resources of the region. Rather, the proposed
• mining and reclamation operations performed by the Operator will be
extremely beneficial in eliminating old waste dumps and
deteriorating structures. Following reclamation of the proposed
surface facilities at the operation, the area will be again useful
as undeveloped lands mainly for wildlife habitat or for limited
residential use.
• 2.04-10 Rev. 09-26-94
