` 1.0 INTRODUCTION
• This report presents the final results of a baseline environmental
study of the groundwater hydrology of the HG Coal Mine permit area. The
location of the permit is shown on Exhibit 1. The study has been
preformed as a part of the effort necessary to obtain permits to mine coal
from the Federal Office of Surface Mining (OSM) and the Colorado Mined
Land Reclamation Board. The study has been performed in accordance with
various acts ,. regulations, and guidelines promulgated by those agencies.
Regional studies included evaluation of ground water aquifers and inven-
tory of local springs and seeps and regional water wells. At the mine
site, the mining and sub-mining zone aquifers were studied, including monitor-
ing of fluid discharges during exploration and monitoring well drilling,
aquifer pump tests, and .g round water sampling.
The. studies and associated analyses described here were preformed in two
sequences. The first sequence was completed by VTN in 1977. The data and
,, analysis compiled by VTN, alone is not sufficient to satisfy the present
regulatory requirements. The second sequence was then initiated in 1980 by
Morrison-Knudsen Co., Inc. to assure a71 new regulatory mandates were
adequately addressed. Various drillhole logs and other geologic information
was obtained from W. R. Grace Co. of Dallas, Texas.
This report, updates the preliminary document, and has been expanded to
incorporate the one year's worth of data collected from February of 1980
to April of 1981. This final report satisfies the regulatory requirements
set forth by the CMLRB to identify and evaluate the baseline groundwater
resource and is amended into the permit application.

1
_. :: ~~ 1 _ . ~.. _ ...__
