As solution mining
wells are retired, piping will be moved to a new well. The system will have valves
installed along the header at each connection to a lateral line and along atl lateral lines
at each connection to an individual well line. These valves will be necessary to allow
movement of piping to new wells, but also provide containment for potential pipe
failures.
The fluids within the well field piping are called injection fluid and production Fluid.
Injection fluid is the leaching medium that is injected into each well in order to dissolve
the mineral nahcolite (naturally occurring sodium bicarbonate). Production fluid is the
fluid that contains the dissolved nahcolite and is purged from each well. Both fluids are
sodium solutions but injection fluid is a lean sodium solution and production fluid is a
concentrated sodium solution. The fluid that would be recirculated would consist of
either injection fluid, production Fluid, or a combination of the two. The following
tables summarize the operating characteristics of injection fluid and production fluid
piping. These characteristics are approximate and will vary over time and with
conditions.
Preliminary Response Plan
Yankee Gulch Sodium Minerals Project
A mer¢an Soda, L.
