APPENDIX G
WELL FIELD SPILL PLAN
YANKEE GULCH SODIUM MINERALS PROJECT
AMERICAN SODA, L.L.P.
1.0 INTRODUCTION
The Yankee Gulch Project Piceance Site consists of the well field area and the initial
processing area. This Plan covers spills that may occur in the well field area due to well
field piping failures. Spills in the initial processing area and other emergency situations
are covered in the preliminary Response Plan. This Plan is provided as an appendix to
the preliminary Response Plan because there is not a specific regulatory requirement for
this Plan. The fluids that will be carried by the well field piping, which are mainly
sodium bicarbonate and sodium carbonate solutions (sodium solutions), are not
regulated materials under EPCRA, CERCLA, or RCRA.
Solution mining will occur within vertical solution mining wells at the Piceance Site.
Approximately 15 wells will be in operation at any given time, with the exception of
commercial operation startup when about 26 wells will be in operation. There will be
an aboveground network of piping that will carry solution mining fluids between wells
and the initial processing facility. Each 5-year mining panel will contain a main header
system. The main header will be connected to lateral piping, and lateral piping will
connect to individual well piping. Each of the piping systems will contain three pipes.
Injection fluid will be transported from the initial processing facility to each solution
mining well in one pipe. Production fluid will be transported from each well to the
initial processing facility in another pipe. The third pipe will be used as a spare pipe for
recirculation purposes (mainly for preheating cavities and performing cavity retirement
procedures). Damage to this piping network could cause the introduction of sodium
solutions to the environment.
2.0 SOURCE DESCRIPTION
The above ground piping network in each 5 year panel will be installed on pipe racks.
Pipe racks will be constructed approximately 18 inches off ground in the well field area
and approximately 16 feet off the ground in the initial processing area, for vehicle
clearance. Although the well field piping is an above ground system, piping will be
installed underground in a few areas. These areas include crossings for roads within
the mining panel and other areas to allow for deer crossing. Pipes will be insulated in
order to minimize heat loss. Information on the header, lateral, and individual well
piping is summarized in the following table.
Preliminary Response Plan
Yankee Culch Sodium Minerals Project
American Soda, L.L.P,
1
