salvage of topsoil and overburden was not done. The quality of the soil at
• the sites sampled show a low salinity and fertility, and acceptable levels of
micronutrients. These sites, 2W-1 thru -4 are shown on Exhibit 23 and
Exhibit 58, Tab Section 13. Samples S-93-1 thru ~ were taken at Cameo
Borrow Area (CBA) No. 2 at the locations shown on Exhibit 23 and 52.
Sample S-93-5 was taken in CBA-1, see Exhibits 23 and 9A. This
material was sampled in preparation for use of the material as cover for
CRDA-1 and 2. These samples showed the typical increasing salinity
values with increasing depth, low fertilitity and acceptable micronutrient
levels. Additional sampling will be done in the CBA-2 during borrowing
operations to avoid the high sodic and salinity levels. Samples S-96-1
thru -3 and S-97-1 thru -3 were taken around the lower operations area of
the Roadside South Portals to evaluate the suitability of the material for
borrow material to cover the Roadside Refuse Disposal Area. No
borrowing is projected at the sample S-97-1site but the high sodium levels
• indicate that borrowing material nearby will need to be monitored closely.
The variability in salinity at this site will require additional sampling during
the borrowing operations.
(c) Exhibit 23, Tab Section 6 illustrates the soil types occurring within the
Roadside North and South Permit areas.
(d) Information in Appendix 9-6 addresses the suitability of each soil unit
within the permit area as a plant growth medium. A section in this
Appendix named "Soils Ratings for Drastically Disturbed Areas" includes
guidelines for evaluating the potential of a soil for reconstruction soil
material. Other tables in the Appendix include most of the properties used
in the rating guide. Table 9-1 includes ratings for the soil groups disturbed
by the operation.
