SOILS
• Soil Information
I' e soils Found on the Stagecoach Stop .Site consist of
Dacono Loam, Loamy Alluvial Land , Nunn Loam, Terrace Escarp-
ments F, Vona Sand Loam . Generally , all these soils are well
drained and are commonly found on level terraces along the
South Platte River .
Dacono Loam - This soil has 5 to LS percent gravel in the
surface la yer and subsoil , and it has a sand and gravel layer
between 20 and 40 inches . Runoff is slow and the hazard of
water erosion is slight . The soil is easy to till and is well
suited to almost all the crops grown in the count' . However it
is not suited to very deep rooted crops .
Permanent grass for pasture or hay is well suited to this soil .
Bromegrass , Orchard Grass and fescue mixed with alfalfa make
Long Lived productive pastures . This soil also has a high
suitability for tree planting .
Loamy Alluvial Land - This soil occurs as small areas in major
clFains, ewaJS . It is a principal source of gravel . Nearly all
areas are Subject to flooding from streams . Fite soils are
shallow and stratified . The strata are moderately textured
material that is underlain by river sand and gravel .
the soils of this land type absorb water at a rapid rate . The
available water capacity is low , but many areas have a high water
table that is beneficial to plant grohth . Some of this land
type is in native grass ; the wetter areas produce sedges and
cattails . This vegetation is largely sustained by the natural
water table and by flooding . Little vegetation is needed .
Nunn Loam - This soil is on stream terraces in the County .
SurChe r_unoff is slow and the hazard of water erosion is slight .
It is east to wort: and Ls well suited to all adapted crops .
In a represetaNve profile , the surface layer is about h inches
thick and noncalcarcous . the subsoil is gra is - brown clay about
17 inches thick . Below a depth of '_S inches it is yellowish -
brown in color , calcareous and stratified to a depth of 40 inches .
terrace Escarpments - Ferrace Escarpments occur as steep side
sloteFor' pAsenr streams . they also occur as the steep faces of
terrace that border hot tom lands and flood plains . This land
type consists of alluvium of variable materials , and is very
shallow over sand and gravel . these materials have a loamy
sand later and in some areas this layer is In percent gravel .
Much of this land type is rapidly being mined for sand and ; ravel ,
and thereafter is not "sable for farming . Terrace Escarpments are
• too shallow , too gravel' , or too steep Cor cultivation . they' are
better suited to grassland , but grass is difficult to re- estahlish .
