MINING PLAN
Western Paving' s Stagecoach Stop Pit is an open pit mine
located near Henderson at 124th Avenue and Brighton Road. There are
two phases of the extraction operation, a dry pit phase and a wet
pit phase. The life of the mine will be approximately eight years
and produce 2,000,000 tons of commercial aggregate.
Mining of the dry pit phase will begin with the removal
of the topsoil and overburden. This material will be stockpiled around
the perimeter of the pit for later use in reclamation. No soil stockpiles
will be placed in the South Platte floodway. These soil stockpiles
will also act as a sound barrier between the mining operation and
adjacent landowners. (See Mining Plan Map. )
A portable crusher spread will be located near the area
to be worked to crush, size and stockpile the gravel . The gravel
stockpiles will not be positioned in the floodway. The access road
will be wetted for dust suppression and the gravel processing equipment
is fitted with spray bars which are kept in use during operating hours.
Four (4) to twenty (20) feet of sand and gravel will be
removed and processed during the dry pit phase. It is estimated that
this phase will take approximately four or five years to complete.
The second phase, the wet pit phase, will commence after
existing gravel has been removed down to the ground water table. A
draoline will be brought in and excavation will continue under water.
• However, some water may be discharged to the South Platte River during
this phase. The discharged water will be monitored and regulated under
the authority of an N.P.D.E.S. permit. It is estimated that this phase
will take another three to four years to complete.
During the dry pit phase of this mine, dust suppression
will be necessary. ',later for the dust suppression will be imported
to the pit from a municipal water supply. 10,000 gallons of water
per day will be necessary to suppress the dust during operation hours.
Western Paving ' s Stagecoach Stop Pit will operate from
the hours of 6:00 a .m. to 10:00 p.m. Adequate sanitary and water facilities
will be provided and maintained for the mining crew. All such facilities
shall be furnished in strict accordance ,with existing and governing
health regulations.
Tractor-trailer rigs will haul the gravel via the access
road on the site onto Brighton Road, and then proceed eastbound on
Highway No. 22 (124th Avenue) to U.S. 85. U.S. 85 will serve as the
major road to the Adams County market area . It is estimated that this
gravel mine will produce 250,000 tons of material per year. Approximately
70 percent of the vehicular traffic will be traveling to the southern
Adams County market area . The remaining 30 percent will be traveling
to the northern Adams County market area.
•
