If
coned fills of substantially differ-
ing materials are specified, the
:ones shall be placed aceozding to
linen and grades shown on the drav-
lage.
Selected backfill material shall be
placed and thoroughly compacted
around structures, pipe conduits, and
antiseep collars in layers at about
the same race oa ell aides to prevent
damage from unequal loading.
The completed work shall conform to
the lines. grades, and 'elevations
shown on the drawings or as staKed in
Lhe field.
Borrov. To the eztent they are
needed and suitable, all materials
from the foundation, cutoff and
spillvay ezcavatfons shall be used
for the construction of the embank-
ment. Nhen additional materials are
seeded, they shall be obtained from
the desSgnated borrow areas.
dll areas and pits, from which mater-
ials are taken to build the dam,
shall be cleared of all vegetable
matter. On dams having an upstream
elope steeper than 3: 1. no material
shall be borrowed within a distance
of 50 feet of any part of the dam.
Oa dams where picas and specifica-
tioae have been approved by the State
Engineer of Colorado, materials shall
not be borrowed within 200 feet of
the toe of the embankment, unless
otherwise shown in the plane.
Cleared materials shall be disposed
of and borrow areas shall be left
smooth and finally dressed so they
are well drained. Slopes in Borrov
areas shall be left not steeper than
2:1.
!loiature control
She mixture content of tt~e fill
SCS, Colorado, April 1980
material shall be adequate for ob-
taining the required compaction.
Haterial that is too vet shall be
dried to meet this requirement, and
material that is too dry shall have
water added and thoroughly mined
until the requirement is met.
Compaction
Construction equipnent shall be oper-
ated over the areas of each layer of
fill to insure that adequate compac-
tion ie obtained. Special equipment
shall be used if needed to obtain the
required compaction.
If a minimum requized density Sa spe-
cified, each layer of fill shall be
compacied as necessary to obtain that
density.
Fill adjacent to structures, pipe
Conduits and antiseep collars shall
be compacted in four (4) inch layers
to a density equivalent to that of
the surrounding fill by means of hand
tamping or manually directed power
tampers or plate vibrators. Fill
adjacent to concrete structures shall
not be compacted until the concrete is
strong enough to support the load.
Heavy equipment shall not be operated
within two (2) feet of any pipe or
structure.
Protection
A protective cover of vegetation shall
be established on all exposed surfaces
of the embankment, spillvay, and Bor-
rov area if soil and clinatlc condi-
tions pex~it. If soil or climatic
conditions preclude the use of vegeta-
tion and protection ie needed, non-
vegetative means. such as mulches or
gravel, may be used. In some places.
temporary vegetation may be used until
conditions permit establlahment of
permanent vegetation. She embankment
and spillway shell be fenced if neces-
