•

I
378-2 Pond
or constructed emergency spillway; or
(2) a combination of a principal
spillway and an emergency spillway.
Livestock Water Tanks and Erosion
Control Dams shall meet the require-
ments of the Slate Engineer of
Colorado. They are permitted only on
watercourses, the channels of which
are determined by the State Engineer
of Colorado to be normally dry.
Drainage area. The drainage area
above the pond must be protected
against erosion to the extent that
expected sedimentation will not
shorten the planned effective Tife of
the structure. The pond must have an
expected useful life of at least 25
years. The drainage. area shall be
large enough so that surface runoff,
together with groundwater flow or
diverted surface water will maintain
an adequate supply of eater in the
pond.
The water quality shall be suitable
far its intended use. In the case of
fish ponds, the watershed shall not
yield colloidal materials or other
wastes that will be damaging to the
species of fish to be produced.
Reservoir area. The topography
and soils of the site shall permit
storage of water at a depth and volume
that insures a dependable supply,
considering beneficial use, sedimenta-
tion, season of use, and evaporation
and seepage losses. If surface runoff
is the primary source of water for a
pond, the soils shall be impervious
enough to prevent excessive seepage
losses or shall be of a type that
sealing is practicable. Watar from
agricultural fields on which insecti-
cides are used shall be diverted
around ponds for fish.
The surface area of a Livestock Water
Tank should be relatively sa,all so
SCS, Colorado, April 1980
that evaporation and seepage losses
are minimal.
Except for fish-out and rearing
ponds, ponds for fish shall have a
minimum size of one-quarter surface
acre, and no more than one-fifth of
pond surface shall have eater depth
less than 2 feet when pond is full.
Depth along the shoreline of fish
ponds should slope abrvptly into
three (3) feet of water. In
addition, ponds where fish will be
overwintered:
1. Below 6,000 feet, should have a
minimum depth of 6 feet over one-
third of pond area. '
2. Above 6,000 feet, should have a
minimum depth of 10 feet over one-
third of the pond area. Where live
stream or aereated spring water flows
continuously into pond, the minimum
depth required is 7 feet over one-
third of pond area.
Ponds where fish will not be over-
wintered (fish-out and rearing ponds)
such as fee-fishing ponds, guest
ranch ponds, and others, temperature
is the primary consideration. Water
temperature cannot exceed 75°F one
(1) foot below surface at any time
during the year for cold water fish.
These ponds may be smaller and shal-
lower than ponds where fish will be
expected to over winter.
Design criteria for embankment
ponds
General. Except for Livestock
Water Tanks and Erosion Control Dams,
special plans and specifications
shall be prepared for dams having an
effective height in excess of ten
(10) feet, or having a surface area
a[ high waterline in excess of twenty
(20) acres in accordance ui[h State
Statutes. These dams shall be
approved by the State Conservation
i
