It

performed to determine the location and quantity of available sources of fine material
(containing primarily clayey and silty material) for slurry wall construction.
The first phase of the investigation consisted of performing reconnaissance to
determine several possible clay borrow sources within and surrounding the project
site. Identified sources include the following locations:
^ Clay waste from the 35~' Avenue gravel pi[ operated by Lafarge.
^ Stockpiled material on the north side of the Cache la Poudre River, directly
north of the site on Flatirons' property,
^ Stockpiled material located [o the east of the City's property.
^ Stockpiled material located on the southeast corner of the City's property.
^ Overburden material existing in the embankment between [he two ponds in
the City's property.
The second phase of the investigation consisted of sampling and determining the
characteristics of the material at three of these locations that were determined to be
viable sources by performing test pits.
^ Stockpiled material on the north side of the Cache la Poudre River. (eight
pits)
^ Stockpiled material located on the southeast corner of the City's
property.(four pits)
r ^ Overburden material existing in the embankment. (two pits)
Test pit locations south of the river are shown on Figure 3. Laboratory analyses were
performed on the collected samples. Results from this second phase indicated that the
stockpile and the embankment, both within the City's property boundary, consisted of
overburden deposits suitable as a clayey or silty material.
The third phase of the investigation consisted of determining the overall quantity and
homogeneity of available material at these two locations. Eight additional test pits
were performed along both sides of the embankment. A sample was collected from
each test pit. Information from these test pits was combined with topographic
information to estimate the available quantities of clayey or silty material.
F. Reconnaissance of Surrounding Subsurface Conditions
Observations were made by a Haley & Aldrich representative of soil and bedrock
conditions at the exposed mined highwall of the water filled gravel pit located to [he
east of the site and the main pit of the 35°i Avenue gravel pit mine located on the west
side of 35'" Avenue.
