Upstream of the confluence with the unnamed tributary, Raton
Creel:: e:;hibits a very restricted floodplain as gradients increase
in the direction of Raton Fass in New Me::ico. The actual
position of the channel has changed in the recent past but can do
so only within a very narrow floodplain. The channel area
upstream from the permit area is not acceptable for farminq.
In conclusion, an alluvial terrace along Raton Creek' was the only
alluvial deposit worthy of consideration as an alluvial valley
floor deposit and for farming potential. The size of the terrace
is smaller than the minimum size typically found in the region
and due to the intermittent flow of Raton Creek: would not receive
enough water- during the summer growing season to warrant
development. Furthermore, the meager alluvial valley floor
depa~~it is not within the permit area and through control of mine
discharge will be safeguarded.

595
