2.04.5
INTRODUCTION
The proposed Carbon Junction Mine is located in portions of Sections
33, T34zN, R9W and Section 33, T35N, R9W, N.M.P.M., La Plata County,
Colorado. The permit area consists of approximately 270 acres. It is pro-
posed that coal will be extracted by surface mining.
SCOPE
This report presents the resplts of a geological investigation of
the proposed Carbon Junction Mine. The report was written in accordance
with requirements of ReRUlations of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation
Board for Coal Mininr~, Rule 2.04.5. The investigation included afield
examination and a review of the available geological literature. A topo-
graphic base of the permit area was provided by Pueblo Coal, Inc. A high
• degree of accuracy was assumed.
GEOLOGY
The area of investigation lies on the eroded surface of sedimentary
rocks of Cretaceous age. Drainages are filled by colluvial material derived
from the underlying bedrock. The surface is covered by a thin soil mantle
of both fine sandy aeolian material and soils derived from bedrock.
The youngest fromation exposed within the area of investigation is the
Fruitland Formation of Upper Cretaceous age. The formation is composed of
irregulary bedded and discontinuous nonmarine sandstone, shale and coal
beds. The formation is gray to brown and black with greenish shale and gray-
green fine grained dense feldspathic sandstone in the upper part. Three
coal zones are known. Locally the Fruitland Formation intertongues with the
underlying Pictured Cliffs Sandstone.
The Pictured Cliffs Sandstone is composed of light-gray, well sorted,
(1)
