Florence Camber of ~o~nmerce
117 S. Pikes Peak Ave.
(719) 784-3544
P.O. Box 145
Florence, Colorado 81226
MARCH 27, 1995
LOUSIANA ORPHANAGE
% KARLEEN b. GENE DAVIS
1318 RANCH ROAD
BOISE, IDAHO. 83702
Dear Folks:
I take this means to write to you regarding a piece of Property
that is currently owned by the Orphanage and located in Florence.
A portion of your property has been a landmark in the Florence
area for as long as I can remember, and I have lived in Florence
nearly 60 years.
Recently the Board of Fremont County Commissioners approved a
permit to open a Gravel Pit and t o operate it seven days a week.
The property abounds Colorado State Hig hway 67 on the East and is
located at the North approach to Florence. We are not against the
taking of sand and gzavel from this site, however we are against
the seven Day operation being so close to the State Highway, as well
as the noise this operation will make...And further, we are deeply
concerned that the Land Mark that we know as UNION MILL HILL, will
soon disappear in the Sand and Gravel operation when they cut down
the hill.
T have enclosed a picture of the area in question. These Foot Hills
once housed the Smelters that melted Gold and Silver from Cripple
Creek and Victor Co., and hence, ~. that is why they were called
UNION MILL HILL. Florence High School has for years painted
the F, symbolic of our School on the Hill for all to see...
If you have any authority over this matter, we would be very
pleased if you would direct your attention to our concerns that I
have listed. The Permit. (Conditional) is for a 10 Year Period.
After the 10 year period is up, it is to be reclaimed..We do have
a nearby Property Owner who would be interested in buying the
Property if it is for sale. If you have additional questions of
concerns, I would be happy to answer them.
/'cst SincQ\rely !~
Darrell Lindsey, Exe utive Director
The Florence Chamber f Commerce
-n,e axr ~ ~r*ia Ixamhwr ~n r„~nrnrte• ~ Founded in 1912
