-pe Z - Tf~ Porv~w Crtli7n - TArsGy, F~My~-v 76. 7995
Editorial Comment
Restrict gravel pit
Fremont Paving & Redi-Mix Is seeking a
t0-year cenditionzl use permit to rmplemeni a
sand and gravel operation just north cf the
Arkansas River and east of Highway 6..
The matter has pone before the Fremont
County Planning Commission and will come
before the Fremont County Commissioners
before final approval is given.
Two gravel pits already function In the
vicinity. The county and by the City of
Florence both operate gravel pits at the site
which lies between the recently reclaimed
landfill and the river. The pIt proposed Dy
Fremont Paving would be located between
those pits and Highway 67.
There are several arguments In favor of
locating the pit there. Fremont Paving, which
has leased the city's pit, could continue its
operation In the area without having to
relocate. Apparently a good supply of gravel
exists at the site, which is now out of sight of
the city end the highway. Transportation
access is good. While environmental
arguments can be made against the industry
in general, It's a fact of life that construction
calls for significant quantities of gravel.
However, there are concerns which we
hope the planning commission and the county
commissioners will address. Because the '
boundary Lines of the property in question tie
mid-way down the hill, Fremont could
appreciably alter the skyline of the bluffs
overlooking the rive; by removing the top of '.
the hill, V,'hile not only unsightly, that would '
remove a significant barrier to the noise I
pe~erzted by a gravel pii. A pretty, little
arroyo filled with trees and which a;trzets
wildiile could be Kiped out.
If the coun;.: oL;ay the 10-yEtr
cond~.tional use permit (or th^_ gr~'JFI
operation, we wrou'd urge the cou^ty t~
impose restrictions t'~at v,o~~d acsurE: the p~t
doesn't become visible from Florence or from
the hiphw~ey, and be_z~ss c' ra p'orimity to
h._~ ~~ thtt hours Dr O~E'E:~C'1 t•e I~rr,;tFd.
