I~
Section 816.46(j) Continued.
1.0 foot minimum elevation requirement shall apply at all times, including
the period after settlement.
The design specifications for embankment height given in Exhibit 42,
Drainage and Sediment Control Plan, provide for 1.0 foot freeboard
between the emergency spillway design flow level and the top of the
embankment, plus a five percent factor to offset settling.
(k) The constructed height of the dam shall be increased a minimum of 5
percent over the design height to allow for settlement, unless it has been
demonstrated to the regulatory authority that the material used and the
design will ensure against all settlement.
' The design specifications for embankment height given in Exhibit 42,
Drainage and Sediment Control Plan, include a five percent factor for
settlement. The five percent settling factor is conservative (high),
because the construction plans call for compaction of the embankment
fill in ten inch lifts during construction, which wil] all but
eliminate settling.- In addition, ponds will be constructed primarily
with clay, which, because of its high density, will also decrease the
potential for settling.
(1) The minimum top width of the embankment shall not be less than the
quotient of (H + 35)/5, where H is the height, in feet, of the embankment
as measured from the upstream toe of the embankment.
At a minimum, the top width of each pond embankment will not be less
than 20 percent of the sum of the height, in feet, of the embankment
measured at the upstream toe plus 35 feet.
t~
i
f
i

8I6-55R
Revised - January, 1991
