Where the removal of vegetative
material, topsoil, or other materials may result in erosion which may
cause air or water pollution--
(1) The size of the area from which topsoil is removed at any one time
shall be limited;
Reri"North"Area
From Map 1, Kerr Mine Area Mine Plan and Map 31, Kerr Mine Area
Soil Removal and Storage, it can be seen that topsoil and subsoil
shall be removed at a rate assuring an orderly advance of the
mining operation. To ensure that the soil is always removed before
mining operations commence, a buffer zone of approximately 750 feet
will be stripped of topsoil and subsoil in front of overburden
drilling and blasting operations.
Air and water pollution potential will be minimal for the following
reasons. 1) Wind erodibility grouping for the exposed subsoil
horizons and for parent material is of "moderate" erosion hazard
for Pit O1 and Pit 42, and "slight" erosion hazard for Pit lf3 (SCS
Guide for Interpreting Engineering Uses for Soils). 2) The soil
erodibility factor for the same exposed material is "moderate" for
Pit l/1 and Pit 1i2, and "slight" for Pit -l3, as interpreted from the
soil erobibility factor K for the exposed materials (SCS Agronomy
Note II50, 1977). Additional aids in reducing any potential erosion
in Pit X13 are the high content of gravel and cobble in the C hori-
zon which will be exposed, and the gently rolling slopes. 3) As
816-17
