Historical State A~icultural Holdines
At mining operations progress aaoss our coal leases, Trapper affects former state agricultural
leases. Since 1976, Trapper has permitted the agricultural lessee to continue farming practices
but with the stipulation that Trapper withdraw acres from crop production when mining advance
dictates. Areas outside mining prestrip operations are either left in historipl crop rest-rotation
(small grain) or converted to perennial hayaop if these areas have the potential [o wntnbute
signifipnt amounts of sediment into existing sediment control ponds. As previous cropland areas
are mined and reclaimed, Trapper converts all small grain production fields to permanent vegeta-
tionwith the approved haycrop mht in order to reduce erosion potential and manage these areas
until they revert to historipl use after bond release. In the spring of 1992, Trapper will interseed
approximatey 180 aces of existing small grain cropland to perennial hayaop.
1.26 Previously Revegetated Acres
The locations and aaes for all previously revegetated areas, seeded to perennial species, are pre-
sented in map(s) 1.0. To date, Trapper has revegetated approximately 1,664 acres within the
boundaries of active [Wining and revegetated an additional 161 acres within the permit boundary
but outside topsoil stripping limits.
Prior to 1982, Trapper had initially seeded all reclaim uniu m a winter wheat cover crop except for
approxima[ey 15 acres of test plots. The volunteer nature of the winter wheat posed severe
competition with perennial seeding efforts doting 198[ and 1982 A two-year program of seeding
alternate wheat strips to perennials began in 1983 and ended in 1984. This program affected
approximately 275 acres. Direct seeding of perennial species only began in 1982 on topsoiled
• areas in Ashmore, Derringer and Enfield pits. This explains several 1984 trap units (Map 1.0) for
Ashmore, Colt and Dertinger pits.
Not shown on Map(s) 1.0 in this annual report are the areas seeded ro temporary perennial mixes
along roadways, darns and associated disturbances such as topsoil piles which will require final
reclamation prior to the end of the project (life of mine).
[Cb11RD\91ttEi'Tll

i .. ..
