Limited-Results Cultural Resource Survey Form (page 2 of 4) <br />III. Project Location <br />Please attach a photowpy ofUSGS Quad. cleazly showing the project location. The Quad. should be cleazly labeled with <br />the Principal Meridian, Township, Range, Section(s), Quad. map name, and date. Please do not reduce or enlazge the <br />photocopy. <br />14. Description: The general study area is approximately three miles north of the Twentymile Coal <br />Company's mine headquazters and six miles south of Milner, CO. The core holes aze along both sides of <br />Foidel Creek, west of Routt County Road 33. <br />15. Legal Location: Quad. Map: Milner Date(s): 1971 (PI 1973) <br />Principal Meridian: 6th X NM _ Ute _ <br />NOTE: Only generalized subdivision (quarter-quarters) within each section is needed. <br />Township: SN Range: 86W Sec.: 14 '/s: SE/NE/NW, NE/SW/SW <br />& NE/SE/SW <br />If section(s) is/are irregular, explain alignment method: SW comer, western line <br />16. Total number of acres surveyed: 0.7 <br />17. Comments: <br />IV. ENVIRONMENT <br />18. General Topographic Setting: The project azea Is in the eastern portion of Twentymile Pazk south of the <br />Yampa River. The core hole locations are along both the west and east sides of Foidel Creek which is a <br />north flowing tributary of Trout Creek, a tributary of the Yampa River. The two locations on the west side <br />of Foidel Creek aze in generally open rolling grasslands which have been revegetated during conservation <br />reserve progams (CRP). The location on the east side of the creek is in terrain that is generally steeper and <br />more dissected by ridges and drainages. <br />Current Land Use: Livestock grazing and hunting. <br />19. Flora: The vegetation is a mix of open sagebrush meadows with grasses and fortis filling in between the <br />shrubs. The hole location on the west side of Foidel Creek has been revegetated with wheat grasses from <br />CRP activities. <br />20. Soils/Geology: Medium brown silty clay overlying Cretaceous age sedimentary rocks. Two formations <br />are found here: the Williams Formation consisting of sandstone, shale and major coal and to a lesser extent <br />the Res Formation which is sandstone and shale with coal beds in the upper half of the formation. <br />21. Ground Visibility: Visibility was limited and varied from 10 to 40% due to the thick vegetation cover. <br />There were azeas which afforded views oftheground surface via game/livestock trails, rodent backdirtpiles <br />and two-track roads. <br />22. Previous Survey Activity <br />In the project area: OAHP Compass indicates that three cultural studies have occurred within the sections <br />that the core holes aze located. These include: Western Historical Studies (Mehls, Steven & Cazol 1991) <br />for a large coal mining survey in Routt and Moffat Counties; Metcalf Archaeological Consultants <br />Ventilation Shaft Facilities TSN R86W Section 14 (Spath 1995) and the Cyprus Twentymile Coal Company <br />PDS-9901, 9902, 9903, 9904 AND 9905 Core Holes and Seismic Lines 9901, 9902 AND 9903 (Bazclay <br />and Slaughter 1999). <br />
