FRO Resources <br />In each of the 20 or more belts sampled, shrubs along the central <br />• intercept line (Figure 11 were measured to obtain canopy cover by <br />species. Actual density counts were made by species in the entire 4m X <br />lOm belt (including those plants occurring along the intercept line). <br />Canopy cover measurements were made to the nearest Scm. <br />l3) jrea La~rer Vegetation; <br />Trees in woodland types were sampled using a point-centered quarter method <br />(Cottam and Curtis 1956). A total of 40 or more measurements were made <br />using this technique. Basal area and point-to-plant distarae to the <br />nearest tree in each quarter of each point were recorded by species. <br />Restrictions on sampling included measurements of live trees having a <br />diameter-at-breast height of >llcm. <br />d. PRIMARY PRODUCTIVITY STUDIES <br />Primary productivity of herbaceous plants and selected half-shrubs was <br />• measured using a harvest method. Rectangular quadrats (0.25m21 were <br />randomly located within the sampling area (Figure 1). Harvesting was done <br />by fractions including annual forbs, annual grasses, perennial forbs, <br />perennial grasses and half-shrubs. Specific fractions were clipped for <br />important species of forbs, grasses and half-shrubs. Specific fractions <br />were altered somewhat between sampling areas depending on the species <br />present. Current year's growth was sampled for all fractions. All <br />samples were placed in kraft bags and air dried. <br />e. p~VTOSOCIOLOCICAL DATA ANALYSIS <br />Field data have been transcribed onto magnetic tape using a Wang 2200 MVP <br />Minicomputer. Raw data barks put into the computer have been <br />mathematically reduced to summarize cover, density and frequency by <br />species for herbs, half-shrubs, shrubs and trees. Computations performed <br />in reducing data were those derived from literature containing details of <br />methodologies used, as follows: Herbs (Dix 1961), Shrubs (Lindsey 79551 <br />. and Trees (Cottam and Curtis 1956). <br />II.F- 7 <br />
