• 2.04.7.2 SURFACE MATER HYDROLOGY, continued <br />measurement site. during the April site visit flow at site ECW-SH vas <br />' measured .using a bucket and stopwatch. At sites ECW and EC a Saski portable <br />flwae was used. Site ECE had no flow during the April field visit. The flow <br />observed in Engleville Culch vas predominantly the result of anowmelt. Flows <br />were all under 0.1 cfa (Table 5). <br />Engleville Culeh was observed in Hay, 1988 during a precipitation event. <br />Flows were too large to be fully contained in a bucket or to be measured with <br />the portable flume. Rough estimates of flow were made based on cross- <br />sectional area and slope of the channel (Table 5). These flows may represent <br />a high flow condition for Engleville Culch. <br />During the April field visit streamflow was observed to submerge into the <br />alluvium immediately downstream of site EGW and re-emerge dust upstream of <br />site EC (Exhibits AA and CC). However, this condition was not observed during <br />the Hay storm event. This indicates that underflow conditions dominate the <br />flow regime in this reach of the stream during low flow conditions. The <br />effect of this underflow condition can be observed in the streamflow data for <br />stations EGW and EG. Both stations exhibit lower flows than the station <br />immediately upstream. <br />Field observations made by mine operators in the area indicate that streamflow <br />disappears completely during the drier months of July and August. It is <br />• expected that at this time of the year flow only occurs as a direct result of <br />rainstorms. <br />There is insufficient data to determine the flow duration for Engleville <br />Gulch. A gaging station should be established on Engleville Gulch in order to <br />make this determination. In addition, a gaging station would provide more <br />accurate data on streamflows. <br />2.04.7.1.3 Surface Water Quality <br />Surface water quality samples were taken at locations EC and ECW during the <br />April field visit and at EC, ECW, and ECE during the May field visit. Field <br />quality data are shown in Table 5. <br />The results of the water quality laboratory analysis are presented in Appendix <br />4. The analysis shows that none of the elements exceed EPA standards for <br />drinking water. Since there are no disturbed areas upstream of sites EC, EGW <br />and ECE these analyses can be considered representative of the natural quality <br />of Engleville Culch. <br />Sufficient information is not available to address seasonal variations in <br />water quality. At least four quarters of water quality data ars required in <br />order to perform a seasonal analysis. <br />• 2 <br />
