•
The Stoneham soil is deep and well drained. It formed in calcareous
loess and alluvi~ait derived dominantly fran mixed sources. Slope is 6 to 25
percent. 'I~pically, the surface layer is yellowish brown loam 3 inches
thick. The upper 4 inches of the subsoil is yellowish brown clay loam. The
laser 7 inches is very pile brom calcareous heavy loam. Zfie upper 32
inches of the substratum is very pale brain calcareous loam. The lower part
to a depth of 60 inches is pink calcareous sandy clay loam.
l~rmeability of the Strneham soil is moderate. Available water capacity
is high. Effective rooting depth is 60 inches or mnore. Runoff is rapid,
and the hazard of water erosirn is high. The hazard of soil blowing is
high.
This unit is used mainly for native rangeland and wildlife habitat. It
is also used for gravel and road fill.
The potential plant crncnunity cn the Schamber soil is mainly blue grams,
little bluestem, sideoats grams, and needleandthread. The average annual
pro9uction of sir-dry vegetation ranges fran 400 to 1,200 pounds.
The potential plant camnunity m the Stoneham soil is mainly blue
grams, western wheatyrass, and green needlegrass. 'fie average annual
pra9uction of air-dry vegetatirn ranges fran 450 to 1,300 pounds.
If the range is overgrazed, the proportion of preferred forage plants
decrease and the proportirn of less preferred forage plants increases.
Therefore, livestock grazing should be managed so that the desired balance
of E~referred species is maintained in the plant camnunity.
The suitability of this unit for rangeland seeding is poor. The main
limitations for seeding are slope and droughtiness. Livestock grazing
sha~ld be managed to protect the unit fran excessive erosion.
/~0
