reclaimed areas will be sampled annually for herbaceous and shrub cover and
• shrub density. Productivity will not be sampled until the last two years
of the extended liability period. Results of the sampling done in years
one through eight will be compared to baseline reference area data to give
an annual indication of reclamation success.
Determination of revegetation success
(see Section 4.15.7).
Soil testing
WSC plans to test topsoil (both from stockpiles and from the Paonia
Reservoir) before it is seeded to determine the type and amount of soil
amendments required. Soil analyses will measure the following:
• • Micronutrients
• Potassium, calcium, magnesium, and SAR
• Phosphorus
• Nitrogen
• Potassium
• Soil pH and salinity
• Soil texture
Soil extracts will be tested with DTPA solution and micronutrients
measured using an atomic absorption analyzer. Potassium, calcium, and
magnesium will be extracted with ammonium acetate and the extract analyzed
for atomic absorption. Phosphorus determination will be made using sodium
bicarbonate extraction and colorimetric analysis. The specificion elec-
trode method will be used for determination of available nitrate. Soil
texture will determine with the Buoyoucus hydrometer method (sodium herame-
taphosphate dispersing agent). A saturated paste will be tested with an
• electrode pH meter. An extract of each soil sample will be analyzed for
salinity using a Wheatstone conductivity cell.
2.05-54
