Revision
February 1982
• Seedbed Preparation
The distribution of topsoil material will be followed by scarification
of the topsoil surface leaving a friable surface for seeding. An applica-
tion at appropriate rates of nutrient will be spread prior to scarification
if soil tests of the topsoil material indicate the germinating seedlings
would likely respond to fertilization. 1f the nutrient content of the top-
soil material from Paonia Reservoir is sufficient for establishment, fer-
tilizer will be applied after the vegetation is well established.
Seeding
Seeding of the disturbed area will be conducted during the first nor-
mal period for favorable planting conditions after final soil preparation.
• In the Hawk's Nest area the recommended time for seeding and planting of
disturbed areas is mid to late fall, prior to the beginning of winter
precipitation.
The seed mixture proposed for reseeding reclamation areas other than
the riparian zone provides a diverse seed composition for revegetation. It
includes native cool and warm season grasses, fortis, and shrubs. Additional
species may be included as they become commercially available or as recom-
mended at time of seeding by local SCS personnel. The proposed seed mix-
ture will consist of the following species but will depend on seed availa-
bility at the time of seeding.
Grasses
PLS lbs/A
Thickspike wheat grass
Streambank wheat grass (Agropyron dasystachum)
(Agropyron riparium 3
2
Western wheat grass (Agropyron smithii 3
Slender wheat grass (Agropyron trachycalum) 3
Mountain brome (Bromus carinatus 3
2.05-51~
