SANBORN CREEK MINE

PROTECTION OF THE HYDROLOGIC BALANCE
SMALL AREA EXEMPTIONS
The Sanborn Creek Mine portals are to be located approximately
4500 feet east of the Somerset Mine facilities. A haul road and
conveyor is to be constructed between the new portals and the existing
mine facilities. Sedimentation control for about one half of the haul
road and conveyor is provided by existing sedimentation control
structures. The existing sedimentation control system extends from
the mine facilities to the east yard sediment pond.
The Sanborn Creek Mine portals are to be located approximately
2100 feet east of the east yard sedimentation control pond. A
corridor is to be constructed between the new portals and the east
yard. The areas to be disturbed by the construction of this corridor
are as follows:
Area Description Acreage
A Portal Area
0.6 Acres
B Haul Road, Mine Water Treatment 1.3 Acres
Pond, Ditches and Cut Slopes East
of Sanborn Creek
C Conveyor Corridor 0+00 - 13+00 0.6 Acres
D Haul Road, Ditches and Cut Slopes 0.92 Acres
west of Sanborn Creek to East Yard
E Conveyor Corridor 13+00 - 21+00 0.2 Acres
Areas B and D; the haul road, cut slopes and mine water treatment
pond are not considered disturbed area in accordance with rule
4.05.2(4).
Areas A, C & E are considered disturbed area for which small area
exemptions are requested. Drawing 5-021 is a small area exemption map
which shows the exempted areas. Drawing 5-004 shows the details of
the sedimentation control measures proposed.
It is not feasible to pass the run-off from these areas through
a sediment pond because on space limitations and grade. The conveyor
corridors slopes towards the portal area where there is simply not
adequate room to construct a sediment pond. The area is restricted
to the south by the railroad and State Highway 133 and it is
restricted to the north by steep mountainous terrain.
• 8-86
