INTRODUCTION
A cultural resource inventory of two proposed gravel source pits totalling approximately 20 acres, was
carried out by Complete Archaeological Service Associates (CASA) at the request of Sutherland Bros., [nc.
of Nucla. The field work was carried out by Nanry S. Hammack on January 17, 1994.
The project is on privately-owned lands, and the field work was done under the provisions of Colorado
State Archaeological Permit No. 93-16, issued to CASA. Field notes are on Cile at CASA offices in Cortez,
Colorado. No artifacts were collected during the project.
PROJECT' LOCATION
The project area is located in southwestern Colorado (Figure I) within the Colorado Plateau
physiographic province. Background data on the physical enviromnent and natural setting is presented in
earlier reports for block inventories carried out for the DOE UMTRA projects in the Slick Rock (Hammack
1987a) and Naturita (Hammack 1989) areas. A complete description of the area inventoried, including details
on cadastral location, area surveyed, environmental setting, cultural resources, and recommendations is
presented following the body of the text.
The map references for this project are the Horse Range Mesa, Colo. 7.5 minute USGS quadrangle
dated 1960 and the Sig Bucktail Creek, Colo. 7.5 minute USGS quadrangle dated 1973. The West End Gravel
Pit is located in portions of Sections I1 and 12, Township 4G North, Range 15 West (Figure 2) and the Slick
Rock Gravel Pit is located in portions of Section 30, Township 44 North, Range 18 West, and Section 25,
Township 44 North, Range 19 West (Figure 3).
CULTURAL HISTORY AND PREVIOUS RFSBARCH
Background data on the cultural history of this portion of the Western Slope has been summarized
in the above-cited documents prepared for previous im~entories for these areas. The prehistory of the San
Miguel and Dolores river valleys and surrounding areas has been summarized in the State Historical Society
of Colorado's RP-3 report [Vest Cenrrnl Colorado Prehistoric Catrut (Reed 1984) and in the Bureau of land
Management's overview of the archaeological resources of the San Miguel Resource Area (Gleichman and
others 1982). Historic resources are reviewed and summarized in the Colorado Plnrenu Historic Contev
(Husband 1984) RP-3 report and by O'Rourke (1980).
Precious research in the project areas is generally confined to linear seismic linen and block
inventories carried out for the Naturita and Slickrock UMTRA Projects. A record search carried out at the
Colorado Historical Society, Denver indicated that no previously-recorded sites Deere located within one-half
mile of the proposed West End Gravel Pit. A 40 acre area, which includes and surrounds the proposed Slick
Rock Gravel Pit, had been previously surveyed and one site, SSM1990, had been recorded. Site 5SM1944 is
located to the north across the Dolores River and consists of an extensive panel of historic Ute and Anglo
petroglyphs.
