Q
Abstract

A cultural resource inventory of 19.6 acres (7.9 ha) was carried ou[ for two proposed privately-owned
gravel source pits, Montrose County, Colorado. The Slick Rock gravel pit is located on the north bank of the
Dolores river, one mile northwest of the small community of Slick Rock. The West End Gravel Pit is located
on the San Miguel River, approximately 3 miles southeast of Nucla. The field work was done on January 17,
1994 by Nanry S. Hammack, Complete Archaeological Service Associates (CASA) at the request of the gravel
pit permittee, Sutherlanbd Bros., Inc. This project was carried out in compliance with applicable historic
preservation legislation and laws. The field work, on privately-owned lands, was undertaken under the
provisions of Colorado State Archaeological Permit No. 93-]G, issued to CASA.
No cultural resources were located within either of the proposed gravel source pits. The Slickrock
Gravel Pit had been previously surveyed (Hammack 1937b) and one site, ~SM1990, recorded outside of the
present pit boundaries. Cultural resource clearance is recommended for the Slick Rock Gravel Pit and the
West End Gravel Pit as described in this report.
